New Multi-Purpose Trail Section Opens in Philadelphia
June 22, 2012Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

On June 21, 2012, the John Bartram's Gardens Association and the
City of Philadelphia Department of Parks & Recreation
celebrated the official opening of Schuylkill River Trail at
Bartram's Garden. This 0.9 mile section of trail, which
passes through a historic space, is an important part of a regional
network of trails in the Philadelphia area as well as part of the
East Coast Greenway which will ultimately stretch from Maine to
Florida.
Founded in 1728, and located in southwest Philadelphia,
Bartram's Garden is America's oldest botanical garden. Bicyclists
and pedestrians using the trail will enjoy the scenic beauty of the
garden along with picturesque views of the Schuylkill River and the
Philadelphia skyline.
The Schuylkill River Trail at Bartram's Garden is sustainable,
too - it is the first trail in the Philadelphia region to be
constructed with pervious pavement!
JMT served as the lead engineer for the project beginning
with schematic design and continuing through final design and final
bid documents. The project, which meanders through the meadows at
Bartram's Garden, also includes a reconfigured parking area,
associated stormwater management facilities and various trail
amenities.
The project was partially funded with a federal Tiger Grant and
was completed in cooperation with the City of Philadelphia, PennDOT
and Pennsylvania Environmental Council.
