Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project Wins Prestigious OPAL Award

Sparks, MDThe American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) has honored the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project as its Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement for 2008.  The winning project was selected from 26 entries and announced at the ASCE's annual OPAL (Outstanding Projects and Leaders) Awards Gala in Arlington, Virginia, on April 30, 2008.

As the lead joint venture partner for the I-95/I-495/I-295 interchange, JMT employees made a major contribution to the success of the Wilson Bridge Replacement Project.  JMT was responsible for this complex transportation design contract with a $250 million construction cost, built in several phases.  Due to the central location of the interchange, continuous coordination of the I-95/I-495/I-295 project with adjoining projects was imperative.  The JMT team assured that our design and construction were sequenced smoothly with both spans of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge to the west, the $1+ billion development of National Harbor to the south, the I-95/MD 210 interchange to the east, and the widening of I-295 to the north.

The I-95/I-495/I-295 interchange includes eight I-95 mainline bridges, nineteen ramp bridges, and thirty-one retaining walls.  JMT has provided services ranging from surveying, right-of-way plats, civil and structural engineering, traffic engineering and maintenance of traffic, signing and lighting, geotechnical investigations, value engineering, hydrology/hydraulics, stormwater management, and erosion and sediment control.  In addition, JMT environmental scientists worked closely with the Maryland State Highway Administration and GEC environmental staff to prepare and complete environmental studies, documentation and permitting.

JMT is proud to have contributed toward such a vital and highly visible transportation project for Washington D.C., Maryland and Virginia, and to share in this national award with the agencies and other firms who participated.

The American Society of Civil Engineers is America's oldest national engineering society.  Founded in 1852, the ASCE represents more than 140,000 civil engineers worldwide.  ASCE has honored Outstanding Civil Engineering Achievement projects since 1960.
