JMT teamed with Kinsley Construction, Inc. for this $9 Million Design-Build project involving the replacement of the existing four-span continuous steel I-beam SR 1033 (Sherman Street) Bridge over I-83 NB & SB and Mill Creek. PennDOT’s conceptual structure replacement plans included in the advertised bid package detailed a three-span composite prestressed bulb tee bridge which located one of the piers near the edge of Mill Creek. The location of the pier was in an area that was prone to periodic flooding, making it costly to construct and difficult to meet required H&H design criteria so that a waterway permit could be obtained from PADEP. As a result, the Design-Build Team chose to design-bid an alternate bridge replacement to the proposed conceptual three span structure. The alternate structure replacement consisted of a two-span (161 and 104 feet long) continuous composite steel plate girder bridge which eliminated the need for a pier near Mill Creek. Besides the preparation of the bridge replacement plans, JMT’s scope of design services included roadway plans, traffic control plans, right-of-way plans, right-of-way acquisition services, utility coordination and clearance, and quality control.
