Virginia Capitol Surveys

Virginia's Capitol building is the oldest such structure in continuous use in the U.S. and has served as a backdrop during more than 200 years of American history.  The building was designed by Thomas Jefferson, who modeled it after a temple built during the Roman empire.

Despite its age, the Capitol is currently undergoing only its third major renovation, and its first in more than four decades.  JMT is supporting the prime contractors, Gilbane-Christman, with surveying services during the three-year, $74 million exterior and interior renovations.  Our work on this highly-sensitive project includes:

  • Setting and recovery of all project control stations to maintain site control throughout the duration of the renovations.
  • Foundation layout including column lines, a 60 feet deep slurry wall, and shoring.
  • Monitoring of settlement issues relative to the external and internal features of the structure, and back-up support to the monitoring subcontractor.
  • Mapping of the tunnel network associated with a new visitor's center underground, and tying underground passages to the subterranean features to be constructed in this renovation.
  • Layout of critical utilities and surveys for the demolition of the south lawn work area.
  • Layout of all water, sewer, and storm drainage improvements.
  • Supplemental surveys for the alignment of the upper story walls and establishing geometrically-sound measurements to the architect.
