I-77 Southbound Lanes Improvements

Location: Wythe County, Virginia Client: Virginia Department of Transportation

JMT developed construction plans for interstate roadway safety improvements on a fast-tracked basis.

The purpose of this project, near the bridge over the New River, was to reconstruct a problematic curve where numerous crashes had occurred. The Virginia Department of Transportation's (VDOT) Bristol District was tasked to take immediate action, to develop plans and complete construction for approach roadway improvements within a thirteen month timeframe.

As VDOT's design consultant, JMT was responsible for the development of complete construction plans for interstate roadway improvements beginning at the north end of the bridge over the New River. The work consisted of extending the curve, eliminating the tangent section, and increasing the superelevation. JMT's designs also included extending the existing concrete barrier on the bridge on the right edge of pavement for approximately half the length of the project, which also required additional drop inlets and a new concrete ditch behind the barrier. All project elements were completed within the existing right of way.

Extensive project team collaboration between VDOT, JMT, and the contractor, from the initial scoping of the project to final completion of construction, resulted in a fast-tracked project that was completed on time and under budget.

This project won an award from the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance as its top submittal in an annual Engineering Awards program.
