Mercy Medical Center Survey Services

Location: Baltimore, Maryland Client: The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company

JMT performed innovative survey services for the expansion and production of the Mary Catherine Bunting Center at Mercy Medical.

JMT partnered with the Whiting Turner Company to provide survey services for the expansion and production of the Mary Catherine Bunting Center at Mercy Hospital in Baltimore City. The Mary Catherine Bunting Center is an approximately 686,000 square feet, 22 story building and features 196 private patient rooms, shelled floors for future expansion, a roof top garden and 15 operating rooms.

This building provided some unique challenges to standard surveying practices with its 22 stories in the center of downtown Baltimore.  JMT was tasked with establishing base control on the Baltimore City Coordinate System both horizontally and vertically. Once established, column line control was set on each floor as the concrete was poured. This control needed to check from floor to floor and due to limited sight lines, standard survey methods could not be used. After all 22 stories were poured, the control checked to within ΒΌ" from the top floor to the ground floor.

JMT also provided benchmarks on every floor; monitoring of structural components throughout the duration of construction to include; as-built of anchor bolts; elevator layout; curb and gutter layout; hardscape layout; and as-built surveys.  JMT used electronic data collectors with mobile WiFi capabilities to transfer information between the office and field for data exchange. This allowed for quality control of all construction computations, and fast availability of survey data.
