Pier D/E Baggage Screening & Claim Area Improvement

Location: Anne Arundel County, Maryland Client: Maryland Aviation Administration

JMT provided comprehensive program management, technical oversight, and construction management services for major improvements to a baggage handling and claim area at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.

On behalf of the Maryland Aviation Administration, JMT was tasked with providing a new fully inline baggage handling system, renovations to existing baggage claim areas, and related improvements for Concourses D and E at Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.  The scope of work included an approximately 15,000 sf terminal building expansion to accommodate the new bagging screening area, baggage claim area, inbound baggage drop off area, and airfield apron improvements.

The complexity of the project was enhanced during the design phase by evolving baggage screening requirements as well as the need to accommodate future terminal expansion, improvements in technology, and forecasted increases in demand volumes, all while maintaining existing operations for two airlines within the project limits.  In addition, JMT successfully helped the airport apply for and administer an $11.5 million grant for the project.

Upon its completion and certification, JMT's effort was hailed by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) as a model of design and efficiency for a system of its type.  The project was also honored by the Maryland Quality Initiative with an Award of Excellence.
