Virginia Capitol Restoration

Location: Richmond, Virginia Client: Gilbane Building Company, Inc.

JMT performed a full range of construction stakeout and survey services for the restoration of Virginia's Capitol building.

The Virginia State Capitol building was designed by Thomas Jefferson, later the third President of the United States, and occupied in 1788. It is the oldest continuously used state capitol in the United States.

The Virginia Capitol is not only a state treasure, but a tribute to America's heritage. In order to protect and ensure that the Capitol continued to serve as Virginia's seat of government, the building was renovated and updated to accommodate the needs of present and future generations.

JMT staff, in coordination with the prime contractor, Gilbane-Christman, performed a variety of surveying services throughout the duration of the project.  JMT surveyors, working closely with Gilbane-Christman superintendents, created a geometry worksheet of the entire site, including column lines and utilities. This worksheet was used by other contractors on-site as the basis for all construction stakeout and was submitted to the architect as verification of the design. Specific surveying services included:

  • Establishment of horizontal and surveying control throughout the job site and maintaining control points throughout the project.
  • Stakeout of the building foundation and column lines, a 60 foot deep slurry wall and miscellaneous shoring throughout the site.
  • Performed monitoring of settlement issues relative to the external and internal features of the structure.
  • Surveying of the underground tunnel network and the subsequent tying of the underground passages to the subterranean features constructed during the renovation.
  • Layout of critical utilities and surveys for the demolition of the south lawn work area.
  • Layout of all water, sewer, and storm drainage improvements.
  • Providing supplemental surveys for the alignment of the upper story walls and establishing geometrically sound measurements to the architect.
