Water Resources Management
Water resources management is the science of preserving our
natural water environment for today and future generations.
Waterway impoundment caused by the construction of dams, pollution
caused by land erosion and sediment runoff, and excessive nutrients
such as nitrogen and phosphorous have a devastating effect on our
waterways. Viewed globally, water quality and water supply are two
of the most pervasive environmental problems that face
humanity.
JMT is proud to be a leader in applying sound engineering
principles to solve these problems and achieve environmentally
sensitive and sustainable designs. JMT presents innovative
solutions to some of the toughest problems facing our clients. For
example, for the Maryland State Highway Administration, JMT
developed an erosion and sediment control plan for the Inter-County
Connector that used multiple controls (silt fence, inlet protection
and sediment basins) in series to protect the sensitive Little
Paint Branch receiving waters from sediment pollution. Bridges were
designed to not only pass the 100-year design storm but also span
the floodplain to reduce impacts to adjacent non-tidal wetlands.
JMT also assists local environmental groups in developing low
impact stormwater management, Best Management Practices, including
rain gardens and bioretention basins, to treat urban runoff. These
are just a few examples of how JMT designers can preserve and
restore the natural water resources environment.
At JMT, we have a strong team of civil and environmental
